மகாபாரத்தில் பல கதாபாத்திரங்கள் நமக்கு தெரியாமல் இருக்கின்றன. அதில் முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரம் அரவான். அர்ச்சுனன் தீர்த்த யாத்திரை சென்றிருந்த போது மணிபுரியை அடுத்த வனத்தில் மணிபுரி ராஜகுமாரியான சித்ராங்கியை கண்டான். இருவரும் காதல் கொண்டார்கள். சித்ராங்கிக்கு அரவான் என்னும் அருமைப் புதல்வன் பிறந்தான். மலைநாட்டுக் கோமகளுக்கு அர்ச்சுனால் பிறந்த மகனானதால் அரவான் மகா வீரனாயிருந்தான். பாரத யுத்தம் நடக்கப் போகிறது என்று அறிந்த அவனும் பாண்டவர் படையில் சேர வந்து சேர்ந்தான். போர் தொடங்குவதற்கு முன்னால் சகல இலட்சணங்களும் பொருந்திய மகா வீரனான இளைங்கன் ஒருவனைக் களபலி கொடுக்க வேண்டும் என்று பேச்சு வந்த போது, "இதோ நான் இருக்கிறேன். என்னை களபலியாக கொடுங்கள்" என்று அரவான் முன் வந்தான். அவனைக் காட்டிலும் சிறந்த வீரன் யாரும் பாண்டவர் பக்கத்தில் இல்லாத படியால் தானாக முன் வந்த அரவானையே பலி கொடுக்க வேண்டியதாயிற்று. இப்படிப் பட்ட மகாவீரனை நினைந்து பாண்டவர்கள் சொர்கத்தில் இடம் வாங்கி கொடுத்தனர்.

It was a toss between Aravaan and Krishnan. The decision was simple after that.
there is more than this to this story. actually aravaan came front for kauravas and it should be a amavasya day. When sun and the moon come on the same line it becomes amavasya. Sahadevan gives the date as amavasya for the kauravas and then krishna comes in between and start performing the rituals tht should be done on an amavasya day the day before the actual amavasya day. Sun and the moon god get confused and come and ask krishna why is that you are performing the rituals that you should perform this tomorrow. Krishna explains that the day you both are on same line i should perform this and you both are here on the same line and today is amavasya and he will ask pandavas to give the kalappali...
iravan was given kalapali a day before the amavasya as krishna did the trick. i have heard it in one of the story discourses of mahabharatha when i was young. you can see the same story enacted in karnan film too.
